A growing number of communities throughout South Africa are developing local Bitcoin circular economies to empower local residents and help circumvent the harmful social and economic impacts of monetary debasement. Bitcoin Witsand is one of them and, in fact, now has the highest rate of merchant adoption of Bitcoin per capita in the world! Over a decade ago in a tiny coastal village known as El Zonte, two young dreamers hatched a plan to bring change and hope to the children of their community, long before bitcoin made its appearance. When their social projects later integrated bitcoin into their vision, their organization evolved to become known as Bitcoin Beach. In turn, the bitcoin economy emerging in El Zonte would ultimately lead to the government of El Salvador passing a historic new law, making it the first country in the world to declare bitcoin as legal tender. ‘Lekker Feeling: A Bitcoin Ekasi Story’ takes you to Mossel Bay, South Africa, where a group called Bitcoin Ekasi has partnered with a local surfing group to create new opportunities with Bitcoin. There, the group is building new hope for a community still divided by the legacy of Apartheid by empowering the next generation to learn about Bitcoin and surfing as a pathway to individual freedom.
On his journey to visit 40 countries around the world, living on Bitcoin, traveler and content creator Paco de la India visits with the team at Motiv Peru and learns more about the Bitcoin circular economies they are building throughout Peru. The crew visits Motiv Peru's project in Carabayllo where a local Bitcoin circular economy is bringing hope and opportunity to a marginalized and historically excluded community.
Filmmaker Julian Figueroa takes us to Bitcoin Jungle in Uvita, Costa Rica as he follows four fascinating individuals who are dedicating their time and energy to build a fast-growing Bitcoin circular economy deep in the lush jungle and sandy beaches of Costa Rica.
The Maní adoption project in Yucatán, México shares how Bitcoin Yucatán is gradually building a local Bitcoin circular economy grounded in rich cultural traditions. They are connecting the values and principles of Bitcoin to aligned values and principles which run many, many centuries deep within Mayan culture. Key to their work is empowering local women to become more economically and culturally sovereign, contributing to healthier families and community.
Brazil’s Bitcoin Beach is a mini-film produced by BitcoinNews and Blink. The film was shot during the first conference organized by the Bitcoin Beach project in Jericoacoara, a beach town in the north of Brazil. It’s located inside a reservoir in the middle of the desert with a vast beach perfect for surfing, kite-surfing and wind-surfing. The town is in high demand by local and international tourists and soon – bitcoin tourists. The Bitcoin Beach Brazil project has helped over 40 merchants in the town to accept Bitcoin payments and puts up a lot of time and effort to educate the local community and in particular, the young generation.
Local farmers are establishing a Bitcoin circular economy in Costa Rica
